About the Matrix DFE-Platinum Series Distributed Console Model
BecauseeachMatrixDFE‐Platinummoduleispartofasystem,onemoduleiselectedtocontrol
systemmanagementfunctions.ThisSystemManagementModule(SMM)willcoordinateand
controltheconfigurationoftheentirechassis.AccesstotheSMMisavailablethroughanyconsole
(COM)portonanymoduleinthe
chassis.OnlyonelocalconsoleCLIsessioncanbeactiveatany
onetime,andactivestatusisgrantedtothefirstconnectiontoanyoftheconsoleports.SMM
statusisindicatedwhentheMGMTLEDonthemodule’sfaceplateissolidgreen.Thefollowing
sectionprovidesanoverview
oftheSMMconsoleselectionprocess.
The System Management Module (SMM) Console
TheSMMconsoleissimplyaCLIsessionthatoriginatesfromtheSMMmoduleinanygiven
chassis.ThisCLIsessionistheonlyonethatwillacceptCLIcommandsandis,therefore,theonly
serialinterfaceintotheCLIcommandset.AlthoughaccesstotheSMMconsoleisavailablefrom
theconsoleportofanymoduleintheMatrixDFE‐Platinumchassis,controlisgrantedtoonlyone
physicalconnectionatatime.Theactiveconnectionisdeterminedonafirst‐come‐first‐servebasis
withthefirstrightsalwaysgiventothephysicalconnectionoftheSMMconsole,if
present.
Accessing the CLI Through a Console Port
WithoneserialconnectiontoaconsoleportasdescribedintheMatrixDFE‐PlatinumSeries
InstallationGuide,CLIaccesswillalwaysbegrantedtotheSMMconsole.
Withmorethanonephysicalconnection,oneactivesessiontotheSMMconsolewillbeallowed,
andtheotherphysicalconnectionswill
displayamessageindicatingthat theSMMconsoleisin
use.Ondevicestartup,theCLIloginscreenisgenerallydisplayedonalloftheconsoleportsat
first.OnceanSMMmodulehasbeenelected,onlyoneCLIsessionwillstayactiveandmessages
willbeprintedtotheother
modulesindicatingthattheSMMconsoleisinuseelsewhere.
TheCLIsessionwillrunontheSMMmoduleregardlessofwhichconsoleporthasbeen
connected.IfexitisenteredoraCLItimeoutoccurs,theCLIandloginprocesswillsimplyrestart.
Thiswillnotrelinquishcontrolof
theSMMconsole.ControloftheSMMconsolemaybelost,
however,iftheserialconnectionisremovedorifthemoduleisreset.

Note: The distributed console and redundant management features described in this section do not
apply to Matrix DFE-Gold or Matrix N-SA (standalone) devices.
